Yesterday we did a run over of everything we have done this season in Cross Country. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite prepared to give a very in depth thing about everything so I am going to do it here so that no one falls behind.
Angled fences - angled fences are one of the easier obstacles of an XC course. When you are jumping a angled jump you need to get a lot closer to it before you jump. The more angled it is, the closer you will be required to get. So if you come in almost parallel to the jump, you will almost need to be touching it before you head over. Ditches - ditches are a very common feature and quite be quite hard as it is hard to know how high and far to jump. The best way to do it is to imagine a jump there and just pretend you are jumping that as everyone has jumped plenty of jumps! Drops - jumping a drop or a bank can give you an edge in a competition. But beware, jumping too close to the edge might cause you to go out of control or for you to die. Don’t try anything fancy when jumping off a drop. Just jump straight off, possibly in canter or slow gallop. Water - obviously, you will never be asked to go in water that is any higher then the horses legs. The main problem in water is misjudging the height of the jump since you can’t see the bottom of it. The best way to solve that is to think of the jump in relation to the horse as this will not change regardless of whether you are in water or not. Once you have judged the size, jump in the correct place accordingly. Jumping on hills - when you jump down a hill, you normally need to be slightly further away from the jump but it doesn’t matter that much. However, when you are jumping up hill you need to practically have your horses nose to the jump before you go over. When you are going down hill the jump is actually smaller then it is and when you are going uphill it is bigger then it is, so be aware! Corners - the best way to decide whether to take a corner slow and tight or fast and wide is very simply, practice. Next XC lesson you will be given a course that Lilah Applewood will go through with you and then you’ll have time to practice it for a month. This will be the course used in the exam so you’ll need to get lots of practice in!
